Hypopnea Is The Second Domino

What is Hypopnea?

The word ‘Apnea’ is a derivative of two Greek words meaning ‘without’ and ‘breath.’ Hypopnea, though, means ‘shallow breathing.’ It can be considered a less severe form of apnea but can eventually lead to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It, however, can also cause long term damage to your health.

What Causes Hypopnea?

Here are some of the most common factors that lead to it:

  • Overweight
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Aging

What Can I Do to Fight Hypopnea?

Some factors, like aging are beyond our control. As you may have noted above, however, being overweight or obesity are some common causes of hypopnea and apnea. That being the case, exercise and proper diet can be a critical step in fighting against these sleep disorders. If you are a smoker or drink alcohol often another important step is to stop smoking and stop drinking or reduce your intake of alcohol.

Hypopnea can be the second domino that leads to more serious sleep disorders as well as other health problems. It can also cause long term damage to your health. There are simple, effective, and cost effective means of treating hypopnea.
